Our Walks
Sunday Walks
Each Sunday, a 53 seat coach collects walkers from the Toby Carvery, Arrowe Park. which offers free parking for the day. The programme embraces some of the finest walking areas in England and Wales. Please see our latest Walks Programmes.
There are usually five walks available each Sunday ranging from ''Easy' to 'Strenuous'. You can choose which walk to do on the day. At the end of each walk, there is usually an opportunity for refreshments, before catching the coach home.
The cost of a seat on the coach is £20 for members and £21 for non-members.
Wednesday C Walks
These popular walks are held throughout the year, usually within a 30-mile radius of the Wirral. Transport is by private car and if required lifts are arranged at the start on a car share basis. The meeting place is Arrowe Park. Walks are "Moderate" (see the walk grading information) and members usually arrive back on the Wirral by about 4pm.
On alternate Wednesdays there is an easier, Wirral-based walk in addition to the normal programme. The maximum distance for these walks is 6 miles.
Our walks programmes menu item provides more details and the up-to-date walking programme.
Wednesday B- Walks
These walks are confined to within approximately 50 miles of Eastham Library (the meeting place), but usually beyond the area used by the Wednesday C Walks. We aim to commence walking at 10:30am and finish no later than 5pm. Locations include Bangor, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Bala Lake, Welshpool, Shrewsbury, Stone, Buxton, Glossop, Holmfirth, Hebden Bridge, Colne, Clitheroe and Lancaster.

Summer Evening Walks
Between April and August, we organize a programme of Evening Walks on a Tuesday and Friday. The walks start at 7.30pm and usually last up to 2 hours. These are local, 'Easy' grade walks that provide members with a chance to stretch their legs and socialize.
Public Rambles
Public rambles are different again. These walks are open to all, the coaches operate every 3 or 4 weeks between March and October. Pick-up points are in Wirral and Liverpool. The walk leaders are members of other Ramblers walking groups as well as Wirral, and we hope that you enjoy the walks so much that you decide to join us. A broad range of walks is offered, from 5 to 12 miles, and you do not have to be a member of the Ramblers. For more details, see the website Public Rambles
What to expect on a walk
Most of our walks go through fields which may be wet and muddy, over stiles and across ditches in all sorts of weather, so come prepared! We follow Public Rights of Way and maintain a suitable walking pace. Please follow the leaders' directions and try not to get in front of the leader or too far behind the group.
What to wear and carry
- Strong boots or walking shoes with well-patterned soles, and a change of footwear in a plastic bag for the return journey.
- Walking trousers - these should be lightweight and comfortable. Please don't come in jeans, in wet weather they get cold and heavy.
- Windproof top, waterproof jacket and perhaps a fleece (layers of clothing are the way to keep warm or cool).
- Hat and Gloves.
- Packed lunch, plus some calorific snacks.
- Plenty to drink - around 1-3 litres depending on the time of year and length of the walk, plus a hot drink during the winter months.
- Basic first aid kit and any personal medication.
- ID, medical information and contact numbers in case of any incident. (A tag with this information attached to the rucksack is ideal!)
- Rucksack (Big enough for your water bottle, lunch box and to store layers of clothing when not in use).
Walk Grades
We use a points system to indicate how strenuous a walk is going to be. It is basically 1 point per mile and 1 point per 500 feet of climbing.
A Strenuous: (18 to 23 points)
Can be long with hard ascents. For fit and strong walkers only. Eg: 15 miles and 3,500ft of ascent
B+ Fairly Strenuous: (14 to 18 points)
Some steep ascents but within the capabilities of good walkers. Eg: 12 miles and 2,000ft of ascent
B- Moderately strenuous: (11 to 14 points)
Within the capabilities of most walkers with some experience. Eg: 10 miles and 2,000ft of ascent
C Moderate: (7 to 11 points)
Usually at lower level but still a serious walk of up to 5½ hours. Eg: 8 miles and 1,000ft of ascent
D Easy: (5 to 7 points)
Low level at selected locations normally with facilities for after walk sightseeing. Eg: 5 miles and minimum ascent
